The CHS golf team got back on the winning track last week with three match wins over Stoughton, Taunton, and Sharon, improving to 5-8 overall.

The team’s lone loss of the week came against undefeated Oliver Ames as the Tigers just narrowly edged their hosts 155-163 at Blue Hill Country Club. Huck McCready paced the Bulldogs with a team-best round of 40 while Brendan Tourgee, Joey Ryan and Gavin McMahon all shot a 41.

“It was a cool, windy and rainy day so scores were a little higher than normal,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “Given the conditions, I thought we played really well against one of the top teams in the league.”

In their 160-173 win over Stoughton at Easton Country Club, Tourgee was the match medalist a 2-over-par 38. Barucci said Tourgee had a great round that included five pars and a birdie. McCready came in with a 4-over 40, followed by Matt Anderson and McMahon with identical scores of 41.

Against Taunton at Segregansett Country Club the Bulldogs came away with a 169-173 victory with Tourgee again leading the way with a round of 41. McCready and Brian Middleton both shot a 42 while Teddy Shuman and Ryan finished two strokes behind them with a 44.

The Bulldogs ended the week with an exciting win over Sharon, 170-171 at the Cape Club of Sharon. Danny Hall came back into the lineup and shot a 5-over 41 to lead the team to a win. Tourgee and Ryan both had great days as well, shooting 42’s.

Barucci said the emphasis so far this season has been on building match experience for his young golfers.

“Coming into the season we only had three golfers with experience playing in matches,” he said. “Now with one match remaining, we have had 12 of our 16 golfers playing in at least one match. The inexperience certainly hurt us early, but as the season has gone along, we have shown improvement in all aspects of the game and that has been reflected in our record over the past few weeks. Most of our losses were only by two or three strokes and more recently we have been on the other side of that, winning those close matches.”

Barucci noted that McCready has had an incredible season and has earned a spot as an individual in the state tournament this week. Unfortunately, Canton did not qualify as a team this year.

Tourgee has been the most improved golfer on the team, making strides in all aspects of his game. Ryan and Middleton have also shown improvement, while McMahon has been a steady contributor since joining the lineup last week.

Barucci noted that Hall got off to a rough start to the season, but he “worked extremely hard at practice, earned a spot back in the lineup, and helped us win in a very close match at Sharon.”
