Sustainability Corner: Recycling Facility

By

Brought to you by Canton’s Sustainability Committee

Did you know that Canton residents can recycle old stuffed animals, shoes, towels, drapes and clothing — any fabrics that are past their prime and not suitable for donation bins — at the town’s yard waste recycling facility at 99 Pine Street?

The bin is run by Bay State Textile and is exclusively for recycling clothing and other woven or knitted materials. It doesn’t cost anything to put items in the bin, but you do want to make sure that they’re relatively clean and free of mold.

Bay State Textile asks that all items are placed in bags before going into the bin. We’d love to have another textile recycling bin located in town. Send us your suggestions as to where you think it should go at cantonsustainability@gmail.com.

Speaking of items that can be dropped off for free at the Pine Street facility, you are welcome to bring anything that was too big to fit into your home trash or recycling bins. There are two overflow dumpsters at Pine Street specifically for such things. Have an old television or computer taking up room at home? Pine Street has a dumpster for electronics recycling, too. There’s even a bin exclusively for metal recycling, and another for cardboard.

If you’re not sure which bin is which, just ask the attendant at the entrance. You may also be asked to show a driver’s license to prove that you are a resident. As of now, you do need to pay a small annual fee to bring yard waste to 99 Pine Street. Everything else is free if you live in Canton.

The Pine Street facility is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday (between April 1 and December 20) and Wednesday through Saturday in the winter months.

Did you know that curbside composting is also now available in Canton through Black Earth Compost? Reduce food waste by having yours collected weekly and turned into high quality, nutrient-rich compost. Weekly pickups cost $17.99 per month, or $99.99 for six months. Prices will go down by 30 percent once 400 Canton households sign up for curbside composting. Sign up at blackearthcompost.com.
