Independence Day offers reminder of what’s at stake

By

Dear Editor:

America is deeply divided — culturally, religiously and politically. The year 1861 was the last time this nation faced such an internal breaking point, culminating in a tragic, bloody conflict. As we celebrate another Independence Day, our current toxic circumstances are very similar and far more threatening.

How did we arrive at this critical point in our history? Money and religion in politics, a power-hungry man who refuses to accept his election defeat, widespread divisiveness, and the deeply conservative stance of a blatantly political Supreme Court are the toxic ingredients in the mix. Add in the insurrection attempt at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 — still unpunished and tolerated by many — and we have the most dangerous environment since the Civil War.

The man who lost the 2020 presidential election continuously spreads the lie that victory was fraudulently stolen from him. Many ardent followers believe him, refusing to accept the fact that the election was fair and without pervasive fraud at any level. At significant personal risk, many others in his own party have accepted the outcome and have urged him to move on. They know how dangerous his refusal to do so is.

Our independence was achieved by brave men and women who refused to remain under the repressive reign of the British tyrant king. We celebrate that hard-won independence on July 4 every year. Democracy and freedom earned in blood were the results. These cherished gifts have endured and made America the shining champion of liberty and hope for all who seek it. Our freedoms and democracy are in jeopardy due to our cultural divisions, political crisis, and failures to address the existential threats they represent.

As America celebrates its birthday, let freedom ring and deliver this nation from a repeat of 1861. The alternative is unthinkable.
