The legacies of several Canton High athletic greats took center stage this past weekend as the newly revitalized Canton Athletic Hall of Fame held its first formal induction ceremony in several years.

The event was held on Sunday, May 1, at Blue Hill Country Club and was well attended by inductees as well as family members, friends, supporters and CHS alumni. Among them were HOF organizers Jerry Govatsos, Dorsey Wheeler and Paula Sanderson, who resurrected the Hall of Fame after a long period of dormancy following the death of Maura Sullivan.

Sullivan, a local attorney, active community member, and passionate CHS athletics booster, had been the driving force behind the Hall of Fame for a number of years, and the current HOF committee made sure to honor that legacy by posthumously awarding her with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Most importantly, Maura was a champion for so many of our student athletes over the years,” noted CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson. “Sunday’s event had Maura’s touches all over it. It was wonderful.”

Also inducted as part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was former Canton High hockey standout and Stanley Cup winner Steve Rooney (CHS ’81), who was honored for individual Athletic Achievement, and four outstanding Canton High teams of yesteryear: the 2004 and 2006 state champion field hockey teams; the 1967 South Shore champion boys ice hockey team; and the 1966 track relay team that went on to win gold at the Belmont relays in the 4×100.

The track team was coached by George King and featured Fred Bucklin, John Decembrele, Peter Ladow and Joseph Macari, while the hockey team, coached by Russ Kidd, featured Billy Cleveland, Peter Murphy, Chris Pinkham, Kevin Comer, Joe Roache, Steven Matthews, Billy Ford, Charlie Simpson, Tom Gavigan, Tommy St. Jean, Jim Govatsos, Russell Sullivan, Gary Howard, Steve Thornton, Joe Kelleher and Mike Thompson.
