Sustainability Committee News

By

The Canton Sustainability Committee is a town-appointed board made up of seven volunteers who care deeply about being good stewards of our environment. When it was formed several years ago, the committee was tasked to “strive to incorporate the ideals of sustainability into Canton’s culture, economy and built environments in order to create a vibrant, healthy and sustainable community for people of all ages and abilities to work, play and live.”

Some of our initiatives so far have included organizing and promoting the sale of rain barrels to Canton residents this past spring, getting a textile recycling bin set up at the town’s yard waste recycling facility at 99 Pine Street, and helping to bring curbside composting to Canton.

Another one of our efforts this year was to conduct a town-wide trash and recycling survey as the Select Board was negotiating a new waste management contract. We were thrilled to hear from so many of you. One of the things that you made abundantly clear was that you want to learn more about how to recycle properly and about how to reduce waste. A summary of the survey can be found at town.canton.ma.us/844/Sustainability-Committee.

With the goal of helping us all take better care of the environment, we’re launching a semi-regular column in the Canton Citizen to tackle recycling issues. Please send your ideas and comments for future columns to cantonsustainability@gmail.com.

In the meantime, here’s a simple guide to recycling plastics:

* Keep lids on bottles or toss them in the trash — they’re too small to recycle by themselves.

* Rinse and dry all food and drink containers.

* Detergent containers are fine; just be sure they’re free of soapy residue.

* Never put plastic bags in the recycle bin. Save clean plastic bags and return them to the grocery store for recycling (bins for recycling plastic bags are usually found in the area where you return cans and bottles).
