With more players contributing to the running and passing attack combined with a stout defense, the CHS football Bulldogs thoroughly outplayed the visiting Sharon Eagles en route to a decisive, 17-6 win last Thursday at Memorial Field.

The win evened the Bulldogs’ record at 2-2 while Sharon remained winless on the season at 0-4.

Cousins Colin and Jack Albert were key cogs on offense as Colin rushed for 78 yards and Jack added 67 yards. Jack also had two receptions for 30 yards and threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Butler on a halfback option play. Will Keefe added a 33-yard field goal and connected on two extra points.

The Bulldog passing attack also came alive as quarterback Robert Botelho completed seven of 14 passes for 111 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown strike to Vinnie O’Brien. O’Brien finished with 69 receiving yards for the game while Butler caught three passes for 46 yards.

On defense, linebacker Bahsor Mahn led the team with seven tackles and the Bulldogs had two sacks, including a fourth-quarter stop by Carson Campbell that ended a Sharon rally. Lineman Matt Connolly also blocked an extra point attempt and assisted on Canton’s first sack with Ryan Richards, while Jack Albert added five tackles and deflected a pass in the secondary.

Canton scored all of its points in the first half, which allowed the Bulldogs to control the tempo. In their first series, runs by Colin and Jack Albert and Botelho set up the Canton offense at the Sharon 28-yard line. After a motion penalty pushed Canton back five yards, Botelho lofted a pass to O’Brien, who beat his defender for the touchdown. Early in the second quarter, a mix of runs and passes to Colin and Jack Albert brought the offense to the Sharon 17, where Keefe booted a 33-yard field goal.

Sharon got on the board with 3:47 left in the second quarter, but the Canton offense was not finished. Butler’s kickoff return set up the offense at the Bulldog 44-yard line. Runs by Jack Albert and Butler advanced the ball to the Sharon 32, and then Albert took a pitchout from Botelho and tossed a long pass to Butler, who scored with 2:28 left in the half to give Canton a commanding 17-6 lead.

CHS head coach Anthony Fallon said he was pleased to see the offense making the necessary adjustments without injured starting running back Cam Sanchez. His injury status remained unclear as of early this week with more medical appointments scheduled.

Thursday’s game was Canton’s Senior Night and the Bulldogs celebrated their 15 senior players prior to kickoff, including captains Campbell, Connolly, Sanchez and Jack Albert along with Keefe, Richards, Maya Abuelbasher, Brandon Baron, Anthony Botelho, Robert Butler, Jeff Fitzpatrick, Shawn Flores, Mike Gunning, Nam Le and Matt McDonough.

Also honored were the senior cheerleaders, including captains Olivia Dietrich, Elissa Praik and Aliya Fontes and seniors Grace Lesser, Gabby McMahon and Amanda Vrabel.

With four Davenport Division games under their belt, the Bulldogs will next play two Kelley-Rex opponents, starting with King Philip (2-2) tomorrow afternoon at Memorial Field. Canton will then travel to Attleboro on April 16 before wrapping up the season against rival Stoughton on Thursday, April 22, at SHS.
