Sophomore standout Shauna Harney repeated as the 200 individual medley champion and senior Jessica Hart captured her first career league title in the breaststroke as part of an impressive team effort for the Bulldogs at last week’s Hockomock League swimming championships.

Due to COVID-19, teams in the Davenport Division opted to compete individually at their home pools and then times of all swimmers were compiled to determine final results. The Canton girls went on to finish fourth overall with 216 points, trailing only Franklin, Oliver Ames and King Philip — all perennial league powers.

On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs placed a respectable seventh in the team standings — and third-best in the Davenport — with a total score of 163.

“I thought both of our teams did really well,” said head coach Cheryl Cavanaugh. “Considering that over 20 of our swimmers had missed time because of quarantine — these kids had no practice for 14 days, came back on Wednesday and our meet was Thursday and Friday — I’m amazed that we did as well as we did.”

In addition to their gold-medal performances in their top events, both Harney and Hart were instrumental in the relays, teaming with Maddie Rousseau and freshman Keeley Harney to place second in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Shauna Harney also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke — improving on her sixth-place finish from a year ago — while Hart took ninth in the 500 free.

Keeley Harney, coming off a sensational debut season, also impressed in her first league championship meet, placing fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 free. Rousseau added a seventh place finish in the 50 free and took 12th in the 100 free, while Erin Zack placed 12th in the breaststroke.

Leading the way for Canton in the boys competition was senior Javier Ferstler, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50 free and 100 free and was part of two top-five relays: the fourth-place 200 medley along with Austin Lee, Ethan Nguyen and Eric Pham and the fifth-place 200 freestyle along with Pham, Nguyen and Talis Veidis.

Ferstler’s relay partners all contributed in the individual events as well, led by Lee in the breaststroke (4th) and Nguyen in the 100-yard butterfly (8th). The Bulldogs also scored an eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay (Ryan Mullen, Lee, Huy Hong, Veidis) along with top-12 finishes by Veidis in the breaststroke and 100 free, Mullen in the 500 free, and Pham in the 50 free.
