Northern Spy restaurant opens at Revere site

Northern Spy, a new wood-fired fine dining destination at the Revere Heritage Site in Canton, is now open for business. The new restaurant will serve its surrounding south shore community with classic New England cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. Operations begin with a focused family-friendly menu for take-out and delivery only.

Northern Spy is the sister restaurant to Loyal Nine, an award-winning restaurant in Cambridge.

Executive Chef Marc Sheehan’s approach to New England food for Northern Spy includes a mix of classic casual comforts and refined regional cuisine. From burgers to scallops, flatbreads to hearth roasted steak, the opening take-out menu offers a wide range of potential for at-home dining.

In both technique and inspiration, the food at Northern Spy is regionally and historically inspired. Notably, a large traditional wood burning hearth is seated at its core, and adds a seared and smoky accent to almost all parts of the menu.

“The cuisine of New England was born out of an open hearth,” said Sheehan. “When you consider the methods and limitations of wood-fire, you then better understand seasoning and the classic recipes as a whole. This is about celebrating our local flavor at its full potential.”

The take-out menu will be complemented with a robust kids menu, bottled craft cocktails to go, small production wines from the world’s classic regions, New England craft beer, and a range of café options.

Early American patriot Paul Revere founded the Revere Copper Company in Canton in 1801. Today, settled along the Neponset River, Northern Spy inherits Revere’s striking brick Rolling Copper Mill. For more than two years, the site has been meticulously crafted with historic materials as well as a new copper roof from the current Revere Copper Products Company now operating in Rome, New York.

The restaurant is nestled at the center of the larger Paul Revere Heritage Site, a mixed-use space that will contain a historical museum, housing, and a rolling town green. Northern Spy will feature an open sectional dining room, sprawling garden patio, a large separate full bar, and private rooms both big and small for weddings, holiday parties, and other private events.

In response to the ongoing pandemic and rising case numbers, Northern Spy will delay on-premise dining until infection rates are at safer levels.

“We’ve built something beautiful, and we can’t wait to see guests enjoy everything we have to offer,” said Dan Myers, co-owner and director of operations. “We’ll start bringing in folks when times are safer and things feel right. For now, it’s all about crafting great food and pushing the limits of quality dining all within a brown paper bag.”

Loyal Nine opened to great acclaim in 2015. Within its first year it was recognized by Bon Appetit magazine and Eater.com as one of the top new restaurants in America. In addition, Wine Enthusiast magazine listed it among the top 100 wine restaurants in North America. In 2018, the Boston Globe’s Devra First said, “There are Boston restaurants working to tell Boston stories. Perhaps the most interesting is Loyal Nine in Cambridge.”
