Citizen Poetry: Black Lives Matter

By

The following poem was written by Evelyn Carrington (CHS ’18) and recited by her cousin Amber Carrington (CHS ’16) at Saturday’s Stand in Solidarity event at Canton Town Hall.

Black lives matter

you won’t silence the chatter

if our lives matter

what’s with the blood splatter

every day just getting madder

trying to fight as our hearts continue to shatter

because our heads are served on platters

to the ones killing us,

people out there wondering what the fuss is about,

blame the violence on us, like we’re not allowed to be upset

or angry or hurt except we are all those and more.

It’s like war outside of our front door.

Anyone who really knows,

knows why it goes so deep for us,

shows us who’s against us and who needs to be educated.

All frustrated, it shouldn’t be this complicated,

SAY their names, set the world on fire if we have to.

We’re tired of feeling not welcome or unwanted in our own homes.

We not the ones spraying graffiti and looting businesses,

the police are completely starting the violence against

peaceful protesters but you won’t see this clearly.

The media is sneaky and only shows the public what they want them to see.

Every day feels like we’re in hell,

locked up in a cell with no one to tell.

How are we to excel in a country where we are hated

and treated as less than due to the color of our skin,

this is the way it’s always been,

we won’t stop until we get a win,

they can spin the story however they want because we know the truth

down to the root and won’t stop fighting or striding.

All my peoples riding, those who can’t are guiding,

And guess who is hiding?

No such thing as minding your business right now,

if you’re not fighting you’re igniting the fury.

Surely whites can’t fully grasp what we’re going through

but they can’t deny what’s true,

some stand with us as some stand against us

but no matter what you can’t and won’t simmer the chatter,

black lives f***ing matter.

You couldn’t last a day in our skin,

that’s why after a couple of days you’re uncomfortable

and have nothing to say like this is messing up your day,

but how would you feel if you were treated like a stray?

We’ve been cheated all our lives,

causing us to be heated,

your stupidity isn’t needed,

so if you don’t agree please be seated.

History cannot be deleted

and we won’t stop until our mission is completed:

BLACK LIVES MATTER!!!
