B’nai Tikvah to dedicate Holocaust Memorial 9/15

By

B’nai Tikvah invites residents of Canton and surrounding communities to the dedication of its Holocaust Memorial Courtyard on Sunday, September 15, at 1 p.m. at 1301 Washington Street in Canton. The event will serve to dedicate the courtyard and raise awareness of the resources about the Holocaust available at B’nai Tikvah, including the Lustbader-Babcock Library and the Izzy Geller Holocaust Education Series.

The centerpieces of the Memorial Courtyard are two extraordinary pieces of art: a 18-by-5.6-foot mosaic mural by artist David Holleman featuring a view of Europe during the time of the Holocaust and the depiction of the entrapment of the Jewish people with an eye to the future. The second piece is a 5,000-pound granite monument identifying six of Hitler’s concentration camps crowned by an everlasting light.

The B’nai Tikvah congregation is honored to create a new home for the mural conceived to keep the memories of the six million Jews lost in the Holocaust fresh in our minds now and into the future. Natalie Weinberg, president of B’nai Tikvah, shares, “I am committed to this project as I feel we must learn from the past so it will never happen again in the future. It is our responsibility to teach our children that hatred and prejudice have consequences.”

The dedication will feature two speakers: Dr. Lori Lefkovitz, Ruderman Professor of Jewish Studies at Northeastern University, who will present “The Stories Continue: The Holocaust Legacy for Next Generations,” and Dr. David Lustbader, a temple member and son of Holocaust survivors, who will share the history behind the Lustbader-Babcock Library — established as a tribute to both those who endured the horrific events of the Holocaust and those who chose not to close their eyes to the reality.

Tirelessly, a team of congregants met for over a year envisioning and designing the courtyard, while this summer, contractors and craftsman worked to transform the space and repair the mural with utmost care, replacing over 750 tiles to bring the mosaic back to its original beauty from the initial commission installed at Temple Beth Am in Randolph in the early 1970s.

RSVP no later than September 10 by calling B’nai Tikvah at 781-828-5250 or emailing theoffice@bnaitikvahma.org.
