Canton A’s earn doubleheader sweep

By

With a doubleheader sweep at Acushnet on Sunday, the Canton A’s baseball team moved into fourth place in the Cranberry League standings going into the final week of the season.

Canton defeated Acushnet in both games by identical 6-2 scores and are now just two games in back of the Aztecs for third place in the eight-team league.

Now at 10-11 overall, the A’s were due to visit first-place Bourne on Tuesday and will return to Bourne on July 16 for the regular season finale. The team also has a makeup game against Marshfield scheduled for tonight in Pembroke with the A’s designated as the home team.

In their first of two doubleheader wins on Sunday, starter Blake DeCarr picked up his third win of the season, allowing only three hits and striking out five in a complete-game effort.

Leading the team offensively were Matt Farragher with three hits and an RBI; Mitch McCabe and Ethan Murphy with two hits apiece; and Rob Duarte with a two-run triple. Kevin Roberts and John Candiales also added RBI hits for Canton in the win.

In game two, the A’s bats came alive in the third inning to produce five runs, giving pitcher Zach Phillips the win as he went five innings, allowing four hits while striking out three batters. Colin Trahon picked up the save in relief, pitching two innings and striking out four.

Offensively Steve Luttazi, McCabe and Duarte each had two hits and multiple RBIs with McCabe and Duarte each stealing a base. Candiales and Farragher each contributed run-producing hits and Candiales added a stolen base.

The holiday break gave the A’s new life, according to head coach Andrew Poliferno. “After a week off for the July 4 break, we came out looking like an experienced and game-tested team against Acushnet Sunday night,” he said. “I think we hit a point in the season where we will be playing our best baseball and have a good shot at making the playoffs.”

This coming Saturday, July 13, the league’s all stars will participate in the Eastern Mass. Amateur Baseball Classic in Lexington — a four-team tournament featuring all stars from the CBL, Intercity, Yawkey and Boston Park leagues. The Cranberry League will play the Yawkey all stars at 2 p.m. with the winners advancing to play the winner of the Boston Park/Intercity matchup. Representing the A’s on the all-star team are pitcher Max Tarlin, first baseman Luttazi, and second baseman Farragher.
