PR’s abound as CHS boys track edges Sharon

The Canton boys took 1st in the 4×100 relay at the Sunset Invitational in New Bedford.

Every point mattered in the CHS boys track team’s 68-67 win over Sharon last week at home — the first time the Bulldogs have beaten the Eagles in the last 14 seasons. The girls team also had a good showing, falling to Sharon by single digits, 72-64.

Head coach Anna Amico said the meet featured dozens of personal-best performances by members of both Canton squads, including 38 PR’s for the boys team and 44 for the girls.

The key to the boys’ win were victories in the relays, including the 4×100 (Gersom Rivera, Cam Sanchez, Lucca Terenzio and Jonathan Chery) and 4×400 (James Vo, Nate Rose, Mike Mazzola and Zach Goldstein).

In the individual events, Junior Sainvil paced the Bulldogs with four top-two finishes, including first in the 100 meters and triple jump and second in the long jump and 200 meters. Terenzio won the 110-meter hurdles and placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Also scoring wins for Canton were Chery in the 200m, Tommy Pulcini in the discus, and Cooper Ashcraft in the javelin.

Second-place finishes were turned in by Goldstein in the 400, Cole Murphy in the shot put, Justin Rose in the 400 hurdles, and Javens Lucas in the javelin. Several other performers took third, including Sanchez in the 100 and discus, Shawn Welch in the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, Mike Mazzola in the 800, and Pulcini in the shot put.

For the girls team, sophomore Maddie Rousseau won three events — 100, 200 and long jump — and Bronwyn Mahoney took first in both the discus and shot put. Other winners included Sarah Collins in the 400 hurdles, Gabby McDuffie in the javelin, and the 4×400 relay team of Chloe Pennacchio, Annie Hoban, McDuffie and Rosana Cho.

Besides McDuffie’s win in the javelin, Canton swept the event with Pennacchio and Maeve Morrissey placing second and third, respectively. Pennacchio also added a third-place finish in the 800 while Morrissey took third in the discus.

Other point scorers for the girls team included Talya Mendez-DeGraw, who took second in the high jump and third in the 200 and long jump. Angie Elias and Marie Messenger took second in the 400 and mile, respectively, and third-place finisher were turned in by Hoban (mile), Cho (400 hurdles), Dusu Sidibay (shot put), and Leah Murphy (triple jump).

Both Canton teams also had a strong showing at the 10th annual Sunset Track and Field Regional Invitational held Saturday in New Bedford.

The boys 4×100 relay team took first behind Chery, Terenzio, Goldstein and Sainvil, and the girls 4×400 placed third behind Pennacchio, Hoban, Cho and Collins.

Both Canton teams also had an individual winner with Chery placing first in the 200 and Rousseau topping the field in the 100 hurdles. Sainvil took second in the triple jump and third in the 100m; Mahoney took second in the shot put; and Collins and Pulcini placed third in the 400 hurdles and discus, respectively.

Other top-10 finishes were posted by Terenzio in the triple jump (4th) and 110 hurdles (9th), Goldstein in the 200 (6th), Rousseau in the long jump (6th), DeGraw in the high jump (9th), Mahoney in the discus (9th), and Cho and Deyontai Dennis in the 400 hurdles (10th).
