The Canton Citizen is pleased to announce its 2017-18 winter all-star selections. The full list, featuring 27 CHS athletes from 10 sports, appears in this week’s print edition as part of the Citizen’s annual winter sports wrap-up.

Boys MVP

Eddie Marinilli (Wrestling)

Only a sophomore but already in the conversation for all-time great status among CHS athletes, Marinilli made history this season as the first Bulldog wrestler to win an All-State championship. Competing against the best wrestlers in the 138-pound division in all of Massachusetts, he proceeded to win all four of his matches, including back-to-back victories against the Division 1 and Division 3 state champions. Marinilli himself had secured the Division 2 title one week prior, and before that he cruised to the championship at the D2 central sectionals. He would go on to earn a victory at the prestigious New England Championships and finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 41-3.

Girls MVP

Colleen Kelleher (Girls Hockey)

A senior captain and a living CHS sports legend, Kelleher wrapped up an unforgettable four-year career as the lady Bulldogs’ starting goalie with her greatest season to date — one that culminated in a second consecutive trip to the D2 state finals at the TD Garden. While her team again came up short against the top-seeded opponent, Kelleher was sensational in her final game on the big stage, turning away all but one of the Wellesley Raiders’ shot attempts. She finished the season with only 22 goals allowed over 25 games while posting an almost unheard of .953 save percentage for the season.

Boys Hockey

Jack Goyetch

A senior captain and the winner of the 2018 Hockomock League Most Valuable Player award, Goyetch was a do-it-all forward who made his presence felt on every shift he skated. Head coach Brian Shuman described Goyetch as his “hardest worker” and the ultimate team player — the kind who isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty and always makes the right hockey play. While he didn’t produce big scoring totals, Goyetch did come up with his share of key goals and also racked up double-digit assists. He also joins an exclusive club as one of the few athletes in league history to receive the MVP award in multiple seasons after receiving the same honor as a member of the golf team this past fall.

Quinn Gibbs

A senior captain and All-Hockomock selection, Gibbs returned for his second season as the Bulldogs’ starting netminder and somehow managed to improve upon his sensational junior campaign. He almost singlehandedly guided the Bulldogs through the toughest part of their schedule early in the season and went on to produce eye-popping number for one of the best defensive hockey teams in the state, including a goals against average of 0.78 and a save percentage of .944.

Ryan Nolte

A junior and an All-Hockomock selection, Nolte combined with linemate Johnny Hagan to form one of the most lethal one-two scoring duos in all of Division 2. He led the team in scoring for a second straight season and was especially productive over the second half of the campaign and through the playoffs. “Ryan is one of the most dynamic players we have, along with Johnny [Hagan],” noted Coach Shuman. “In terms of both ability and production, the two of them are really unmatched.”

Johnny Hagan

Only a sophomore and already one of the Bulldogs’ most dynamic offensive players, Hagan took his game to new heights this season and proved, in the words of head coach Brian Shuman, that he is a “big-time player in big-time games.” He finished the season among the team leaders in points and saved some of his best performances for the playoffs, where he racked up five goals in three games, including two in the Bulldogs’ comeback attempt versus eventual state champion Plymouth South.

Girls Hockey

Maggie Malloy

Arguably the co-MVP of this year’s state finalist team alongside goalie Colleen Kelleher, Malloy anchored Canton’s top forward line and was a two-way force for one of the best girls hockey teams in the state, finishing tops on the team in both goals (16) and assists (14). While consistently brilliant throughout the course of the season, Malloy was otherworldly throughout the Bulldogs’ run to the Garden as she accounted for six of the team’s 10 postseason goals, including a hat trick against Walpole and the game winner in the state semifinals versus Archbishop Williams.

Lauren Fitzpatrick

A junior forward and multi-time league all-star, Fitzpatrick is one of the lady Bulldogs’ most gifted scorers and she proved it again this season as she racked up 15 goals, good for second on the team. She also led the team in plus-minus at plus-38 and finished second on the squad in assists with 12. She made her mark in the postseason with a four-point outing (1g, 3a) against Notre Dame Academy and will be looked at to lead the team again next year when she returns for her final season.

Kendra Farrelly

A senior captain and an All-Hockomock selection, Farrelly was an indispensible part of the last two state finalist teams, working her way up to the top forward line alongside Maggie Malloy and Lauren Fitzpatrick. She finished as the team’s third leading scorer this season with 13 goals and 11 assists, and she was once again productive in the postseason with four points, including a goal and an assist in wins versus Walpole and Notre Dame Academy.

Leah McClellan

A junior and an All-Hockomock selection, McClellan was the top defenseman on a team that allowed only 22 goals in 25 games and returned to the state championship game for a second consecutive season. She also chipped in offensively with three goals and seven assists, finishing in a tie for fifth on the team with 10 total points …
