Milestone, comeback win highlight big week for volleyball

By

Senior captain Nicole Poole recorded her 1,000th career assist and the CHS varsity volleyball team collected two more victories in what was another productive week for the runaway Davenport Division champs.

The lady Bulldogs defeated Foxboro last Monday on Senior Night and closed out the week with an exciting, 3-2 comeback win over nonleague Duxbury on Friday. Their only blemish was a 3-1 road loss to Stoughton on Wednesday — a somewhat surprising result for a team that has lost just two other times all season.

The Black Knights, however, have always given their division rivals a battle, especially in matches played on their home court. Nevertheless, head coach Pat Cawley said it was “not a good day for the Bulldogs” as Stoughton looked like the better team for the majority of the match.

Against Foxboro earlier in the week, the result was much different as the Canton girls got contributions from all 12 seniors en route to a 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 win. It was a total team effort but also a night to celebrate the individual accomplishments of Poole, who reached her big career milestone in the third and final set.

Cawley has raved about her starting setter all season, calling her the “glue” that holds the team together. “Nicole is a selfless and talented player who has put her mark on CHS volleyball,” Cawley remarked after the match.

Poole also had a big hand in Friday’s thrilling win over Duxbury, dishing out a whopping 37 assists to go along with 18 digs and two kills as Canton mounted an impressive rally.

“This was a great win for us against a top D2 team,” said Cawley after the victory. “After falling behind two sets to none, we came out giving it everything we had and battled for the next three sets.”

Other standouts for Canton in the win included Erika Lum, who had a huge game with 13 kills and 21 digs, Casey Shea and Emma Murphy, who combined for 23 kills and four blocks, and Julia Panico, who was outstanding on defense with 27 digs.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 15-3 overall with one regular match to go — a home contest against nonleague Quincy scheduled for Monday, October 31. Then it’s on to the Division 2 centrals, with tournament pairings and seeding information slated to be announced sometime this week.
