Female football player treated like everyone else

CHS head football coach Dave Bohane hopes to get some playing time for No. 24, senior Kyshani Dumott, in Thursday’s season finale against Stoughton, but as with everyone else on the Bulldogs’ roster, playing time will be determined based on game setting and conditions.

While Bohane and his coaches are proud of what Dumott has accomplished as Canton’s first female player on the varsity team, she has always been treated like any other player — and Dumott agrees, noting that she “wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Dumott, at 5’5” and 130 pounds, is a second-team split end receiver, safety, and special teams player. She saw action in the game against North Attleboro, but the majority of her snaps have come with the junior varsity team.

Bohane said she has played very well, attended every practice, practiced hard, and never shied away from tackling star runners such as Dexter Green, Elias Camacho, or Shane Nordgren.

“She is a quick, tough kid, very coachable and cooperative,” said Bohane. “She has a very strong work ethic. She never shies away. Just recently in a practice, she took on [Green] in a tackling drill.”

Dumott said she tried out for football her sophomore year to “try something new.” She returned to the squad for her junior and senior years, and other than dressing in a different locker room, she has fit right in with her fellow teammates.

“The players have treated me like anyone else,” said Dumott, reflecting on her time with the football team. “They gave me respect as a player.”

Dumott also excels on the basketball court and is expected to be a key member of the girls’ varsity team in the upcoming season. After graduation, she hopes to attend either UMass or MassBay Community College to study engineering.

Bohane said he’s not surprised that a girl wants to play football at CHS. “Women sports at Canton High are doing so great here,” he said. “They are so competitive and offer so much choice. If someone enjoys football, wants to play football and be a part of the team and put in the work, I would like to have them.”

“Our players have not treated her any different,” he added. “They value her as a teammate and their equal.”
