Girls’ soccer rolls into postseason with 2 more W’s

By

It was another easy week for the vaunted CHS girls’ soccer team as the Bulldogs cruised past Foxboro 3-0 at home last Wednesday before blowing out Stoughton 9-1 on the road in Friday’s Hockomock League finale.

The girls were also due to play at nonleague Andover on Monday, but the game was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy and it was unclear whether it would be rescheduled with the postseason looming later this week.

Either way, the Bulldogs are clearly one of the top teams in all of Division 2 and will likely earn a top-three seeding in the south sectional tournament after finishing atop the Davenport with a record of 14-1-1.

Last week’s victory over the Warriors was the clincher, and it happened to come on senior night in front of a large crowd of loyal supporters.

Head coach Paul Turner said the girls actually looked a bit nervous in the early going, but they eventually settled down and completely took over the match, scoring all three goals over the final 20 minutes of the first half.

“We played about as good as I’ve seen us play all season,” noted Turner, who described the game as a “fun night” for the team and its fans.

All three goals were scored by senior captains — Brianna Duserick, Lauren Berman, and Meg Lennon — and the Bulldogs’ other four seniors all contributed to the victory, including captain Jessie Brooks and goalkeeper Kristen Burns as well as Kelly Bradley and Sam Grady.

In the Stoughton game on Friday, Turner rested a handful of players and gave extended playing time to some of his reserves, yet the team still rolled in its most lopsided victory of the season.

Berman finished with a team-high four goals, giving her 40 goals on the year and 51 total points, which are easily tops in the Hockomock League and could very well lead the state, according to Turner.

Andrea Tamasi added two goals against the Black Knights, while Lennon, Chloe Sheppard, and Lexi MacQuarrie all finished with one goal apiece.

The Bulldogs will now move on to the postseason, where they will take aim at another south sectional title while continuing their pursuit of the ultimate prize: the Division 2 state championship trophy.
