The Canton High volleyball team remains on its quest for a perfect season after knocking off three more Davenport Division opponents last week to improve to 16-0 with three games to play.

It goes without saying that the Bulldogs have locked up the division title; however, they still have a few tough opponents in Stoughton (12-4) and Medway (10-3) before they can celebrate an undefeated campaign.

Either way, Canton has enjoyed a truly remarkable run — even for its own lofty standards — and the victory laps continued last week with wins over Milford (3-0), Oliver Ames (3-1), and Sharon (3-0).

On Monday against Milford, senior outside hitters Julia Murphy and Jackie Bornemann paced the offense with a combined 20 kills as the Bulldogs took all three sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. Both players also chipped in a pair of aces, while senior setter Kaitlin Phillips tallied 15 assists and one ace over two sets.

Sophomore Erin Proctor handled the setting duties in the second set and did a solid job. Other key contributors included junior Avery Devoe, who racked up four kills, three aces and one block, and Ellie Teague, who put away a couple of kills.

Two days later at Oliver Ames, Canton won the first two sets by a combined 18 points, then struggled in a set-three loss before regrouping in set four to clinch the match.

Head coach Pat Cawley attributed their struggles in the third set to “sloppy passing and poor serving.” However, it proved to be just a temporary setback as the team looked sharp in the fourth and deciding set.

Murphy was outstanding in the win and finished with a team-high 15 kills to go along with two aces, four blocks, and 10 digs. Devoe also had a strong performance with six kills, three aces and four blocks, as did senior opposite Lindsey Arthur, who finished with three kills, two blocks and two digs.

Proctor got the start at setter in place of Phillips (illness), and she did not disappoint, tallying 21 assists and nine digs. Abbey Willis also figured in the victory, contributing a couple of kills and digs while serving well.

“It was a good experience as everyone got to play and contribute to the win,” said Cawley after the match.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the three-game slate with a match at Sharon on Friday, and while they struggled in the opening set, they did enough overall to earn a straight-set victory (25-19, 25-15, 25-11).

The team’s top performers all played well, led by Murphy with a dozen kills. Teague, Kim Frazier, and Alex Walsh all came through in a dominant set-three win, while Proctor and Meghan Hartnett shared the setting duties and both did a “great job,” according to Cawley.

This week Canton was due to play at Foxboro on Monday and Stoughton on Wednesday, and victories in both contests would ensure the Bulldogs their first undefeated league season since 2004. The girls will then wrap up the regular season on Monday at nonleague Medway before awaiting their seeding in the upcoming sectional tournament.
