Senior Jon Vaughn and sophomore Lauren Berman from Canton High were crowned event champions in the 100-meter dash and mile, respectively, at the Division III State Track Championships, held Friday, May 27, at Oliver Ames High School in Easton.

Jon Vaughn

Vaughn ran 11.08 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and had an even better time in the preliminaries (11.06), where he placed second. Berman won her race at 5:16.85.

Both will move on to the All-State Championships this weekend along with three other members of the girls’ track team. The girls’ team finished fifth out of 32 teams and the boys’ team finished 11th out of 36 teams.

Seniors Chidimma Nwankwo and Radiya Buchanan and junior Vicky Tondre had an outstanding day, earning high scores in several events. For the boys’ team, senior Tom Kerikas scored in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, and the 4×400 relay team had its best time of the season (3:31.9), finishing sixth overall. Members of that relay included Vaughn, senior Chris Boughter, junior Cam Huber and sophomore Obi Nwankwo.

“Overall, it was an awesome day for Canton track, said girls’ head coach Ben Mattson. “We are sending three girls in four different events tor the first time in a while. With a fifth-place finish in spring, especially with pole vault and all of the other field events outdoor and being such a small Division 3 school, we had a great day.

“We have a leadership group on this team all the way through, freshmen to seniors, and in the future we can look back on this meet as a stepping stone for what is to come and as a turning point for Canton track, and I honestly believe that.”

Lauren Berman

Chidimma Nwankwo came in fourth in the discus (103’2”) and second in the shot put (35’11”), qualifying for All-States in both events. Buchanan came in seventh in the high jump (5’) and executed a season personal-best jump in the triple jump (35’4”) and placed third to qualify for the All-States. The jump occurred right after she finished running the 4×100. That relay finished seventh behind Buchanan, Tondre, sophomore Mellyn Costello and freshman Rachel Campagna.

Tondre finished seventh in the 200-meter dash (26.75) and sixth in the long jump (16’9”).

Also placing in the meet were: senior Kate D’Orazio, sixth, 400 hurdles, 70.2; and Costello, eighth, 100 hurdles, 17.19 seconds.

The 4×400 relay team finished 14th behind Berman, D’Orazio, and two freshmen, Michaela Nannery and Kim McNally. Campagna also ran in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash and finished 32nd at 13.73 seconds.

For the boys’ team, Kerikas placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.67 and followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.14 seconds.

Boughter placed eighth in the high jump at five feet, 10 inches. Other placements for the boys’ team included Obi Nwankwo, 400, 16th, 57:12; senior Mike Bronstein, mile, 33rd, 5:00.12; junior Evan Feldman, 200 preliminaries, 27th, 24:39; and senior Chris Haidul, 400-meter hurdles, 25th, 63.7 seconds.

The 4×100 meter relay unit of senior Alex Chery, Feldman, and juniors Justin Saccone and Derek Seto finished 18th at 48.19 seconds.
