Former CHS athletes continue to shine

While most college students were relaxing on their winter break, a number of athletes from Canton were unable to spend much quality time at home. Instead of skiing at Blue Hills or ordering a pizza at Cobb’s Corner Pizzeria or a sandwich at the News Stand Market and Deli, these college student-athletes had to return to school to compete on the court or on the ice.

At UMass Dartmouth, former Canton High basketball star Erika Bornemanncontinues to impress opposing coaches in her rookie season. On January 10, the freshman forward was named Little East Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week. That week, she averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, making 12 of 25 shots from the field while leading her team in scoring in games against Westfield State (17 points) and Southern Maine (11 points).

Off the field, she has maintained straight A’s during her first semester in the classroom.

Former CHS ice hockey star and Hockomock League MVP Bryan Rooneyscored a goal and an assist for Stonehill College in a 6-2 win over Assumption on January 22. The Stonehill freshman now has three goals and an assist for the Skyhawks. Rooney’s former high school teammate, Sean McNeil, is also on the team as a sophomore. McNeil has one goal on the season.

Meanwhile, former three-sport superstar Brittany Lyons continues to produce for the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team. Lyons is fifth on the team in goals with seven this season to go along with her four assists for the 10th ranked Bobcats (16-9-1).

Former CHS hockey standout and Eastern Junior Hockey League all star Chris Rooney now has three goals and eight assists for the Providence College ice hockey team. His latest assist came in a 5-2 home loss to UNH on January 28. Chris is the son of Steve Rooney, a 1981 graduate of Canton High School and a member of the 1986 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens.

After failing to make the postseason in 2009, sophomore Brianna Trabucco played a huge role in Merrimack College’s volleyball team reaching the postseason this past fall. Trabucco, a former Hock MVP, helped Merrimack conclude its regular season with seven straight victories, losing only three of 24 sets, to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament. Merrimack eventually lost in the tournament’s quarterfinals, but the team finished 12-14 overall and 9-6 in the conference. Trabucco finished the season with .2 kills per set, 1.23 assists per set, and 1.48 digs per set. She will be one of four juniors returning next season.

Canton native and St. Sebastian’s alum Matt Hadge continued his impressive sophomore season in net for the Wesleyan University men’s ice hockey team, which recently defeated defending NCAA Division III national champion Norwich University for just the second time in program history behind Hadge’s 47 saves.

In addition, his 2.16 goals-against average is the 12th best mark in the country.

Grad student Kristine Stigas just finished up another great season with the Boston College field hockey team. The former Canton High School star and Boston College starting goalie finished the season with a 12-7-0 record with five shutouts. The Eagles ended their season losing 2-1 in overtime to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament.

Former Canton High School hockey star Dino Federico has added a spark to the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team. The sophomore forward already has four goals and six assists this season for the Ravens.

Former Xaverian High School baseball star and Canton resident Patrick Bogue is preparing for his junior season with Merrimack College. Bogue and the Warriors’ baseball team finished 5-7 in the fall season.
