CHS girls’ soccer team sails to first round victory
By Jeffrey CattelThe seventh seeded CHS girls’ soccer team sailed to an easy 6-1 victory over 10th seed Bishop Stang in the first round of the state tournament last week.
The girls dominated from the beginning with senior captain Michelle Whelan scoring 45 seconds into the game.
But Coach Paul Turner said it was both a blessing and a curse.
“Getting an early goal was the best thing that could have happened and also the worst,” he said. “We settled down, but took our foot off the pedal and forgot about good habits.”
Sophomore Lauren Berman scored nine minutes into the game, but Bishop Stang scored quickly to keep the game at 2-1. Canton responded with two more goals, one each by junior Megan Barrera and freshman Vicky Tondre, before half time.
In the second half, the girls continued to add to their lead with two more goals, a second from Berman and one from freshman Kim McNally.
Berman and sophomores Brianna Duserick and Meghan Lennon provided assists.
“We all agreed that although we were comfortable, it was not our best performance,” Turner said. “We know we need to play better to win against Medfield.”
The results from Tuesday’s game against second seed Medfield will appear in next week’s Citizen.
