CHS cross country teams prepare for Class C meet

It’s do or die for the CHS cross-country teams as the State Division 5 Class Meet will be held Saturday, November 13, at 9:25 a.m. at Franklin Park in Boston.

Boys’ coach Chris Elgar said his team has the best chance it has had in the last few years to be picked for the All-State Meet by finishing as one of the top four teams in Class 5, or finishing fifth with the best cumulative time compared to the Division 4 and Division 6 fifth-place teams.

Running Saturday as Canton’s top seven will be Jimmy Paschal, Mike Bronstein, Josh Sheehan, Saeed Vossoughi, John Whittemore, Kevin O’Donnell and Teagan McClintock. Alternates are Chris Haidul and Chad Cohen.

“If we are going to make it all the way to the All-States, then this is one experienced group to get it done,” Elgar said.

Following the team’s strong fifth-place finish in the Hock League meet, Elgar said he is confident that if the team puts out the same strong effort, “we will be fighting for an All-State berth.”

Last year’s team finished seventh out of 34 teams.

Both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams tuned up for the Class Meet by running in the State Coaches Invitational Meet November 6 in Wrentham. Races were held separately for freshmen and sophomores (3K or two-mile) with a 5K race for juniors and seniors.

In the junior/senior race, Paschal finished 22nd out of 299 competitors at 17:01; Bronstein, 33rd, 17:17; Sheehan, 64th, 17:59; and Vossoughi, 87th, 18:20.

Other times by the juniors and seniors included: O’Donnell, 18:32; McClintock, 18:41; Whittemore, 19:14; Dave Rosenberg, 19:24; Haidul, 19:30; Cohen, 19:31: Kevin Connolly, 19:34, Eric Newton, 19:35; Luke Hanna, 19:43; Mike Vartanian, 19:46; Rob Bronstein, 19:56; Sean Akey, 20:13; Jake McDermott, 20:19; Ethan Eastwood, 20:32; Zach Levenson, 20:58; Joe Columbo, 21:14; Paul D’Amico, 22:45; and John O’Connor, 23:12.

Times and spots were unavailable for the freshmen race but Elgar reported that Dan Bronstein, Peter Hartfiel, and Alex Marchand performed very well. Also running well were sophomores Joe Sabatino, Dave Moore, Mike Rota, and Ben Sheehan. Sabatino finished 47th and Moore finished 57th.

Elgar said the race of the day was turned in by Moore, who just missed the top 50 by improving more than a minute in his time.

Girls’ coach Peter Boucher said his veterans ran hard and he was very encouraged by the sophomores. A week ago the team finished ninth in the league meet. “Our Hock meet was a tale of two cities,” Boucher said, “as some of our girls had their best day — Kelsey Sayers, Kate D’Orazio, Courtney Loughnane and Lauren Winter — but it was also the worst of times as the rest of the team either did not run their best or were sick. We really hope and believe we can pull it together and have a great race at Franklin Park.”

In the junior/senior race, senior Sara Teague was Canton’s top finisher, 89th at 22:52. She was followed by Mairead Bagley, 92nd, 22:57; Rushaine Dalrymple, 102nd, 23:12; Jen Sidney, 121st, 23:27; Micaela Nannery, 127th, 23:32; Isobel Heck, 178th, 24:53; Audrey Cilento, 179th, 24:54; Nina Kalita, 191st, 25:35; Stephanie Mui, 195th, 25:44; Michelle Anand, 201st, 25:51; Mary Korycanski, 202nd, 25:53; and Iryn Zhovinirchyk, 252nd, 32:18.

Sophomore Kelsey Sayers finished 44th in the sophomore race with a time of 22:25. She was followed by Elena Popadopoulis, 63rd, 23:23; Lauren Winter, 84th, 23:56; and Katherine McClintock, 88th, 24:07.

Loughnane was the top freshman for Canton, finishing 72nd with a time of 14:08. She was followed by Melissa Eng, 127th, 16:02; Caitlin Albert, 145th, 16:25; and Hailey Lee, 163rd, 19:28.
