Injury-depleted CHS football team blanked by Panthers

By

An injury-depleted CHS football team was shut down 28-0 by Franklin Friday night at Memorial Field.

With key running back Jon Vaughn lost for the season after sustaining a concussion, receiver/running back Elias Camacho limited by an injury, and top defensive lineman Brandyn Sparks out with an injury, CHS coach Jim Goff used his reserves and retooled his team. But the Panthers had no problem running and passing over the weakened Canton team. The Panther defense keyed on Bulldog running back Anthony LaRose, keeping three or four defenders on him on every attempted Bulldog run.

Franklin scored seven points in the first quarter, opened a 21-0 lead at the half, and added an insurance touchdown in the third quarter. Panther quarterback Will Richards passed for two  touchdowns, including passes of 15 and 22 yards. The Panther running game scored on two runs of four yards, led by running back Billy Barrera. On one of the drives, the Panthers blocked a Canton quick punt and recovered the ball on their opponent’s 25-yard line. Three plays later, Franklin scored a touchdown on  a four-yard run.

The closest Canton came to the end zone was in the first quarter when a Canton drive, sparked by the running of LaRose and a pass from Ryan Conrad to Matt McLaughlin, brought the Bulldogs to the Panther 30-yard line.

Defensively, Canton played a lot of reserves and had different people playing different positions. Playing well were Justin Rudy, Shane Nordgren, George Zanetas, Dave Mansfield and Logan Cerutti. Leading tacklers for Canton were LaRose with eight, and McLaughlin and Camacho, each with six.

Canton will host Oliver Ames (2-4) Friday night at 7 p.m. The Tigers were blanked by King Philip 31-0 last week.

In other football news last week, Hockomock League athletic directors voted 8-1 to have each of the small schools play four out of five members of the large school division next year. Canton, Sharon, Oliver Ames, Stoughton, and Foxboro comprise the small school (Davenport) division. Mansfield, North Attleboro, Franklin, Attleboro, and King Philip comprise the large school (Kelly-Rex) division.

Canton Athletic Director Danny Erickson was the lone athletic director to vote against the plan.

“We were hoping for greater relief than that, but the sense of the league was not on board,” he said.
