Girls’ soccer team dominates Silver Lake, Stoughton, Attleboro

The CHS girls’ soccer team dominated in three victories last week: 4-0 against Silver Lake Regional, 5-1 over Stoughton, and 4-0 against Attleboro. The girls improved their record to 7-3-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs knew Silver Lake would provide tough competition. Still, the girls started off slow, but gained the lead at the end of the first half off a direct corner kick from sophomore Brianna Duserick. In the second half, the Bulldogs picked up three more goals — another by Duserick and one each from sophomore Lauren Berman and freshman Kim McNally.

“This was one of our best performances this season,” coach Paul Turner said.

The girls started off slow again against Stoughton. Berman put the team ahead 1-0 at the half, but Stoughton netted the equalizer at the beginning of the second.

“We were not playing well in the first half,” Turner said. “But after Stoughton tied up the game, we settled down and focused on our game play.”

This plan seemed to work as the girls scored four more goals — one more from Berman and one each by Duserick, McNally, and senior captain Michelle Whelan.

In the Attleboro game, the girls continued their trend of weak-first-half and strong-second-half performances. Entering the second half tied at 0-0, Canton quickly took the lead when Berman put the Bulldogs on the board. By game’s end, she netted three more goals.

“The girls are feeling good right now,” Turner said, reflecting on the team’s performance this week. “Now we’re one game away from qualifying for the tournament.”

Turner attributed the girls’ dramatic improvement in game play this week to a few small changes in positions on the field. The biggest change moved junior Kensey Waterman from midfield to center defense.

“Even though we were playing better, we were letting too many goals by,” Turner said. “When we switched Kensey in the game against Silver Lake, we saw a massive difference.”

With Waterman in the backfield, McNally took over in the midfield, and in the last three games, the Bulldogs have only given up one goal. Turner said he was reluctant to make the change because Waterman is such a strong midfielder, but he was impressed with McNally’s play this week.

“As a freshman, she played far beyond her years,” Turner said of McNally.
