CHS football injuries mount in loss to NA

By

The CHS football team suffered a 46-7 loss to host North Attleboro Friday night, but even more disheartening than the loss was the season-ending concussion sustained by star running back Jon Vaughn at the start of the game as well as injuries to top rusher Anthony LaRose and receiver/running back and cornerback Elias Camacho.

LaRose is expected to play in Friday’s home game against Franklin, but Camacho’s status is not known. Camacho hurt his leg in the third quarter and could not walk without support at game’s end.

With the loss of Vaughn, Canton re-tooled its lineup and put Camacho into a receiver/running back role with several new formations created by offensive coordinator Kevin Foley. The change caught North Attleboro by surprise, and Canton maintained possession of the ball for most of the first quarter. Canton recovered the opening onside kick at midfield, and runs by Camacho and LaRose carried the offense to the 29-yard line. A pass interference call against NA set the offense up at the 8-yard line, and Camacho carried the ball on a sweep to the 2-yard line. Canton overloaded the formation very wide and quarterback Ryan Conrad fooled the defense with a keeper to the weak side for the first touchdown in the game with three minutes to go in the first quarter.

But the Rocketeers — 6-0 and rated 11th in the Boston Globe Top 20 — stormed back to score 12 points by the end of the quarter, adding 14 more in the second quarter for a 26-7 halftime lead. NA racked up an additional 13 points in the third quarter to increase its lead to 39-7.

Despite the injuries, the Canton offense played pretty well, led by Conrad, LaRose, and Camacho. According to CHS head coach Jim Goff, however, the defense didn’t execute the game plan.

“I really don’t know why we were not ready,” he said. “We knew what they were going to do on film. But the team reacted like they were surprised and were not prepared at all. Give North Attleboro credit. They executed their offense very well. We didn’t execute our defense at all.”

The Rocketeers scored on a 50-yard pass, a one-yard run, a 39-yard pass, a 55-yard run, an 11-yard pass, a 20-yard fumble return, a 29-yard pass, and a 47-yard run late in the game when both teams played their reserves.

Canton had good runs from reserves Anthony Bires and Ian Flavin late in the game.

Franklin (4-2) comes to Canton Friday night at 7 p.m. following last week’s 26-7 win over Oliver Ames.
