Up and down week for CHS football team

By

After two weeks of practice, CHS head football coach Jim Goff described his team as a “work in progress” as the Bulldogs prepare to play in its season opener at Weston this Saturday, September 11, at 4 p.m.

CHS footballLast week, the Bulldogs played Milton to an even scrimmage, with both teams managing two touchdowns on a blistering hot day. Canton then scrimmaged Hanover and let up three touchdowns while scoring one.

The most impressive part of the Hanover contest came in the third quarter when Canton dominated the offensive line of scrimmage. After an early interception by Jon Vaughn, Canton marched from its own 30-yard line to the end zone, led by running backs Vaughn and Anthony LaRose with Connor McLaughlin at quarterback. The offensive line executed well behind the play of linemen Matt Nichols, George Zanetas, Devin Costa, Dave Mansfield, Mike Mitton, and Tony George. Receiver Elias Camacho caught three passes, and on defense Alex Cherry was active at linebacker as was Vaughn.

Goff said the two quarterbacks vying for the starting spot are McLaughlin and Josh Matt.

“We had some good play today, some not so good,” Goff said. “We are going to execute much better, though, in order to beat Weston.”

Against Milton, Goff said he was pleased that the team “didn’t give up anything easy. We kept fighting despite the heat. Our young guys are playing physical.”

Previewing Weston, Goff said they will be a tough challenge for CHS as they are “big up front, vastly improved, and well coached.” Weston is a Division 3 school and plays an independent schedule.
