CHS softball team gaining momentum despite rainouts

Although it’s already school vacation week, the Canton High School varsity softball team has only five games under its belt due to three cancellations early in the season, but the girls are touting a respectable 3-2 overall record and by all indications, are improving and gaining confidence every time they hit the field.

On Monday, April 12, Canton came home with a 3-2 victory over the Foxboro Warriors, and though the score was close, the lady Bulldogs’ dexterity at bat and on the field made for an exciting game. Pitcher Olivia Kenyon threw five strikeouts, and despite giving up a couple of hits, her supportive defense kept Foxboro from taking the lead. Junior third baseman Michelle Whelan executed a fantastic double play in the fourth inning, and senior outfielder Christen Ivanoski caught a fly ball that doubled up a Foxboro runner on second base.

Freshman outfielder Olivia Murphy went 2 for 3 and drove in a run; Whelan scored in the third and  Murphy led off the sixth inning with a double, which led to the winning run.

Visiting North Attleboro took a little wind out of Canton’s sails on Wednesday, April 14, as the Red Rocketeers shut out the Bulldogs 3-0.

“NA is one of the top teams in the league, but I think we can beat them the next time,” said coach Danielle McNamara. “It just wasn’t our day.”

The loss didn’t deter Canton one bit as the next day the team thrashed visiting Stoughton 7-0.

Canton had ten hits altogether, and Kenyon struck out five on the mound while giving up only two hits. Canton scored two runs in the first inning, one each in the second, third and fourth, and two more in the fifth. Murphy went 2 for 3 with an RBI; Kenyon went 2 for 4 with two RBIs; and senior shortstop Kelly White went 2 for 4.

“We beat Stoughton last year once,” McNamara said. “They are a tough team with a good program, and our girls should be really proud. It was a great comeback after the NA game. Being aggressive is something we have to remember, so as long as the girls stay strong in that sense, we have a good chance of winning a lot of games.”

The Bulldogs got back to action yesterday with an away game at Franklin. Their next two games will also be on the road: at nonleague Hanover Friday and at King Philip Monday, April 26.
