Man About Canton: New Restaurants

By

Did you know …

Two new restaurants are being proposed for the center of Canton: A Middle Eastern restaurant at 515 Washington Street (formerly a flower shop) and a burger and seafood restaurant at 588 Washington Street that will be called Boston’s Baddest Burger and the Mainely Lobstah. The Chubby Chickpea, which formerly occupied 588 Washington Street, has moved to Jackson Street.

The Amber Road Café breakfast shop at 635 Washington Street is rumored to be opening a coffee shop in the same building.

Interesting animals have recently been spotted in Canton: Public Works Operations Manager Dan Teague spotted a bobcat in Canton woodlands while MAC saw a fisher cat in the woods at the end of Edward Street. Additionally, former Dean S. Luce School teacher Al D’Attanasio spotted three deer eating his shrubs at 273 Norfolk Street.

There are at least three Canton town officials that do not live in Canton fulltime. Wonder why no one says anything about this? Years ago, the Canton League of Women Voters would be right on top of this, but that organization does not exist today … too bad!

CHS senior Kellie Stigas was named to the Boston Herald 2013 Field Hockey All-Scholastic Team. Stigas, a CHS four-year starter at center-midfield, was named the Hockomock League MVP after leading her team to a 12-2-5 record.

Avery Devoe, a six-foot, one-inch Canton High School senior middle/outside hitter on the volleyball team, was named to the 2013 Boston Herald All-Scholastic Team. Devoe was also named the MVP of the Hockomock League after leading the Bulldogs to a 19-3 record and the Davenport title.

Standard premiums for Medicare Part B, which cover doctors’ services and outpatient care, will remain at $104.90 a month in 2014, the same as this year. This disproves a mass email that has circulated since 2010 claiming that under the Affordable Care Act, the Part B premium would reach $247 a month by 2014.

According to the AARP Bulletin, almost 70 percent of adults 50 and over take vitamins and supplements.

Retired state employees in 2013 received an average pension of $28,564 while the average pension of a teacher in 2014 was $40,258.

Bill Bratton, who once lived in Canton and was a former Boston police commissioner and Los Angeles chief of police, was recently named to lead the New York Police Department for a second time.

The Blue Hills ski area, which has 12 trails on 60 acres of skiable terrain, charges $449 for a season pass while a day pass cost less than $30 during the week and only $39 on weekends and holidays. For more information, go to www.ski-bluehills.com.

The Canton High School basketball team is making some noise. In a recent tournament game, CHS beat Avon 82-66 with senior captain Sam Larson scoring 33 points. CHS went on to win the Blackstone-Millville Regional High Holiday Tournament, beating Burriville High School 73-24 in the title game.

MAC was saddened to hear of the death of former major leaguer Mike Hegan at age 71. Back in 1961, MAC, playing for Northeastern University, played against Hegan, who played for Holy Cross College before signing with the New York Yankees. It is interesting to note that Hegan held the Major League record for most consecutive games (178) at first base without committing an error. The record was recently broken by Kevin Youkilis, who went 238 consecutive errorless games at first base while playing for the Boston Red Sox.

Finally, the Boston Herald, in a recent editorial, called the raising of the legal age for cigarette sales to 21 “hypocrisy over smokes.” It stated that smoking is “dumb and unhealthy,” but quoted one official as saying the “legal age is 18. It is the age when you are an adult; you can fight in wars; you can vote; and you can get married, and now you are going to tell 18 year olds that they can’t buy a pack of cigarettes?” By the way, under the state medical marijuana law, an 18 year old can get a 60-day supply of the plant with a doctor’s prescription. The town of Canton has joined seven other communities in raising the legal smoking age to 21 while four others have set it at 19.

Criticizing another’s garden doesn’t keep the weeds out of your own.

This is all for now folks. See you next week.
