The Bulldogs ended their regular season with two wins, making them the winners of last week’s Bill Riley Classic Tournament at Westwood High School.
The girls’ first victory came against the hosts, as Canton snuck by Westwood with a 55-54 win.
The Bulldogs were up by about ten points at the half.
“We played well in the first half making our shots and rebounding,” said head coach Kaitlin Mills.
In the second half Westwood started shooting better as a team and made a run, pulling ahead by six late in the third. The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth on the defensive end and hit some big shots to come from behind and get the win.
The win was a team effort as several Bulldogs had impressive numbers.
Junior guard Alana Pitts-Anaya had 16 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Junior forward Olivia Murphy had 21 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks, and five steals. She shot 5-5 from the line. Senior guard Nicki Fralick added eight points (all in the fourth quarter).
The championship game against Norwood was another nail-biter, with the Bulldogs winning 62-57.
Canton defended well on the perimeter against a typically hot shooting Norwood team and was able to earn the victory.
Murphy had a monster game with 27 points, 28 boards, four blocks and six steals, which helped earn her tournament MVP status.
“This was the first time ever that Canton won the Bill Riley Classic Tournament,” said Mills. “It is great momentum going into the state tournament.”
The Bulldogs play tonight (Thursday) away against second seeded Norwell at 7 p.m.
