Sidney and Vaughn place 3rd at All-State track championships

The Canton High indoor track teams were well represented at the All-State Track Championships, as Canton seniors Matt Sidney (high jump) and Jon Vaughn (55-meter hurdles) both placed third. Both will continue on to the New England championships tomorrow, March 4, and according to CHS head coach Chris Elgar, they have a good chance to advance to the National Championships. Because of Sidney and Vaughn, the Bulldogs finished 11th among 56 teams.

Vaughn finished at 7.82 seconds in the preliminary race but bettered his time to 7.8 seconds in the finals. The first-place winner was senior Greg Boursiquot of Stoughton High School, who finished at 7.53. Vaughn won the Class C sectionals with a best time of 7.79 seconds.

Sidney equaled his Class C winning jump with a six-foot, six-inch mark — two inches away from the winning mark of six feet, eight inches set by Nick Staley of BC High.

The 4×400 relay team of junior Cam Huber, seniors Chris Boughter and Tom Kerikas, and sophomore Obi Nwankwo finished 19th overall. Senior Chidimma Nwankwo, the only member of the girls’ team to qualify, placed 16th among 22 competitors in the shot put with a best throw of 33 feet, three inches.

“Championship season was a great success,” Elgar said, noting that Canton had its best team scores in both the Class C and All-State meets since at least 2000. “What a great senior class.”
