Mother’s tribute to son was courageous, powerful

By

Dear Editor:

Harriet Burak’s article about her son Michael was featured on the front page of your paper (“My Weekend with Michael,” September 26). That took great courage for both you and the mother to come forth about the hideous nightmare of drug abuse. How these kids get to that point comes by many a path: bully? Experimentation that takes control of an addictive personality? Terrible personal blow? Some folks are born with a thinner shell than others, and what you and I could shrug off wounds them to the core.

This article was a warning to many of us. Early intervention and consistent therapy is a must. It won’t just go away.

Those parents who go through life with “perfect” children who have no physical or psychological disorders are blessed indeed — and very lucky, as these situations can emerge from the best of family care, no matter how loving.

Thank you, Ms. Burak, for stepping forth and giving life to your son and educating us about the sequence of this dreadful disease.

Sincerely,

Alice C. Brown
