Girls’ tennis team loses 1st round heartbreaker
By Holly EricksonIn a heartbreaker of a match, the CHS girls’ tennis team ended its season with a 3-2 tournament loss to Somerset-Berkley. The 10th seeded Bulldogs played their best against the sixth seed on Friday, June 1, but it ultimately wasn’t enough as the team came up short in a few crucial matches.
Hitting the road for what would be their ultimate match of the season, the girls got wins from the singles play of the Nannery sisters. Sophomore Erica won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while senior Micaela, in her last match of her CHS career, brought home a 7-5, 6-3 win in a very close match.
Other well-played matches came in doubles play, with the junior duo of Kristen Burns and Aimee Pina winning their first set 6-3 before losing the next two (6-1, 6-3). And juniors Eleni Papadopoulos and Pujitha Ganni lost a critical tiebreaker in the first set and then fell in their second set with a 7-6, 6-4 loss.
Despite the loss, head coach Bill Kates had only positive things to say about his team.
“Overall, we played really well,” he said. “The girls gave Somerset a heck of a match, so much so that the other coach was sweating bullets.”
In describing the season, Kates added, “I’m very happy with a 12-6 record. I left with a good taste in my mouth after a very successful season.”
