News Notes: CFD assists with building collapse
By Mike BergerA specially trained group of Canton firefighters who serve on the Norfolk County Technical Rescue Team were deployed to the scene of a partial building collapse at a home in Wellesley following a motor vehicle collision last week.
Responding CFD personnel also brought the technical rescue trailer that it houses and maintains in Canton. The trailer contains various types of equipment used for specialized rescues, such as those involving a structural building collapse, trench collapse, or rescues involving confined spaces or large animals.
In the Wellesley incident, Leo Reardon who heads up Canton’s EMS program and is one of leaders of the trailer unit, said the vehicle struck the rear of the home, causing a section of foundation to collapse and leaving the car partially wedged in the basement of the home with the exterior wall resting on the vehicle’s hood. Reardon said rescue technicians were able to construct some temporary shoring to stabilize the rafters in the basement in order to support the missing section of foundation. Afterwards, firefighters carefully removed the vehicle and placed more shoring to fill the void and support the exterior wall. This enabled Wellesley’s Fire and Building departments to safely evaluate the home while preventing any further collapse.
MedFlight called after serious motorcycle crash
A motorcyclist sustained significant injuries and was med-flighted to a Boston trauma center following a collision with a large truck near the Route 138 overpass in Canton on Saturday, September 19. The accident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. and left the motorcycle operator, a 29-year-old male, in serious condition with injuries to his legs and head. Canton EMS Coordinator Leo Reardon said paramedics were able to stabilize the patient, who was conscience and alert, but they decided to request a med-flight helicopter due to concerns with his airway and the possibility of internal injuries.
