The Canton High varsity golf team has already qualified for the state tournament after notching two more match wins last week, boosting its record to 8-1 overall while maintaining the top spot in the Hockomock Davenport Division. The Bulldogs beat King Philip 134-141 and Sharon 138-173 on their home course at Blue Hill Country Club.

In the win over the KP Warriors, the Bulldogs tied their home course record with a team score of 134. Chase Thomas also set an individual program record at home with a match-best round of three-under-par 31.

Thomas’s record-setting round included birdies on the second and seventh holes along with an eagle on the fourth hole. Senior Cam Washburn finished right behind him with a career-best round of 32 (-2), highlighted by an eagle on hole 7 and a birdie on hole 3.

Chase Brodney finished third on the team with a career-best score of 35, while teammates Matt Ryan, Harrison Weitz and Nolan Gillis all tied for fourth with a two-over round of 36.

In the win over Sharon, Thomas, Ryan and Weitz all posted even-par scores of 34, while sophomore Cam Lyons, playing in his first varsity match, shot a two-over 36. “[Lyons] had been playing great over the past couple weeks and earned a spot in the lineup for this match,” noted head coach Mike Barucci. “Having someone join our lineup and immediately make an impact shows the strong depth our team has. This certainly helps as we wrap up the final weeks of our season and begin the postseason.”

With several recent rainouts having to be made up, the Bulldogs have a busy week with an away match on Tuesday at North Attleboro followed by home matches Wednesday and today against Mansfield and Oliver Ames. The team will then travel to Pine Oaks Golf Club to face the OA Tigers on their home course tomorrow afternoon.
