Library announces temporary closure starting 6/29
By Canton CitizenIn preparation for its upcoming restoration and renovation project, the Canton Public Library will be closed for a few weeks, starting June 29. During that time, both professional movers and library staff will be relocating some of the library’s materials, shelving, and equipment. This work will allow Seaver Company, the general contractor, to carry out the highly anticipated and planned upgrade of the building.
During the temporary closure, patrons can still reserve materials online and pick them up at any other library in the OCLN network. Materials may be returned to any library in the OCLN network or to the book drop in the parking lot of the Canton Public Library depending on availability during the construction set-up. The location pick-up for any books currently on hold can be changed on the library website. A list of OCLN libraries will appear when a book is placed on hold.
There will be no disruption to services for either Libby or Hoopla. Patrons will be notified by email when the building re-opens.
Repairs are needed due to water leakage over many years. The renovation will also update the space better, as it has been over 20 years since the last major work on the building.
This project is Chapter 3 in the Next Chapter Library Repair and Restoration project. Chapter 1 encompassed a major roof and HVAC overhaul, and Chapter 2 has just been completed, with the dedication of a new public park in front of the library on Saturday, June 20.
Following the library’s temporary closure, it will reopen, offering access to books and other materials on the ground floor and on the second floor. Patrons will enter through the Junior Room entrance. The main floor will not be accessible to the public during the renovation period, which will last until approximately early fall 2027.
“The staff and I are so excited to begin this phase of renovation for our library,” said Rosie Moore, assistant director of the library. “This work will bring much-needed upgrades and a greatly improved library experience for all of our patrons.”
