News Notes: Canton placed on Level 2 Drought notice
By Mike BergerOn June 9, due to limited groundwater recharge this spring, the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs placed the town of Canton in a Level 2 drought condition, indicating “significant drought.”
Level 2 calls for limiting outdoor watering using only hand-held hoses, drip irrigation, or watering cans between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. No irrigation of lawns by sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems is permitted while the drought is ongoing.
Other recommended steps besides minimizing use of water outdoors include sweeping drives, walks, patios, and other outdoor areas with a broom rather hosing them off; washing vehicles using a bucket and sponge; using a hose with a shut-off nozzle for rinse only; and using a commercial car wash. Residents are also advised to cover swimming pools when not in use to prevent evaporation.
Municipal water use for health, safety, or to meet the town’s core functions such as firefighting, hydrant flushing, water or sewer cleaning are not restricted.
