CHS girls lacrosse rebounds from nail-biting loss
By Jay TurnerAfter a rare defeat last week at the hands of the King Philip Warriors, the CHS girls varsity lacrosse team bounced right back at the start of this week with a convincing home win over Milford.
With their latest victory, the Bulldogs improved to 9-2 on the season and 7-2 in league games, putting them one game behind Foxboro in the race for the Davenport Division title.
In the MIAA power rankings, the Canton girls are currently 15th, which is second best among Hockomock teams behind only 10th-ranked KP.
In last Thursday’s 10-9 loss to the Warriors, the Bulldogs raced out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter but were unable to keep their hosts at bay for long. The tide turned just before the half as KP struck for three unanswered goals to cut its deficit to one.
Two minutes into the third quarter, the hosts struck again to tie the score at 6-all and then reeled off three more goals to go up 9-6.
Refusing to go down quietly, the Bulldogs would score twice towards the end of the period before evening the score at 9-9 on a goal by team scoring leader Nora Giannacopoulos in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the visitors, KP managed to chew up some valuable time before delivering the final blow with a go-ahead goal with under two minutes remaining.
Despite the loss, freshman Grace Starr had another strong game to finish with a hat trick, while Giannacopoulos collected two goals and two assists. Also getting on the scoreboard for the visitors were Shannon Lane (2 goals, 1 assist), Kate Giannacopoulos (1 goal, 2 assists), and Deanna Kolokithas.
In Monday’s 15-4 victory over the Milford Hawks, both Nora Giannacopoulos and Starr powered the offense with four goals apiece. Kate Giannacopoulos added two goals and two assists, while Lane finished with two goals and one assist. Kalynn Souza also scored twice for the Bulldogs and Kolokithas registered a pair of assists.
As of May 3, Nora Giannacopoulos was just a few points behind Franklin’s Clara Blongastainer for the overall league lead with 39 goals and 15 assists. Lane ranks second on the team with 33 goals and six assists, followed by two freshmen, Starr (29 goals, 4 assists) and Kate Giannacopoulos (19 goals, 6 assists). Junior Cassidy Lyons has also been very productive with seven goals and 13 assists.
After hosting Foxboro on Wednesday, the Canton girls will travel to Braintree tomorrow followed by another nonleague road game this Saturday at North Quincy.
