(L-R) Anti-Scam Taskforce members Louis Jutras, Diane Tynan, Nick Maffeo, Arafat Knight and Alex Benjamin
Panelists at the free session included Diane Tynan, taskforce chair and director of the Canton Department of Elder & Human Services; Nick Maffeo, taskforce vice chair and president/CEO of Canton Co-operative Bank; Louis Jutras, information systems manager for the town of Canton; Canton Veterans Agent Arafat Knight; Gayle Bellotti of the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office; Alex Benjamin, DEHS social worker; and Elaine Egersheim, resident service coordinator for the Canton Housing Authority. Also joining the session were newly appointed Canton Police Chief Michael Daniels and CPD Deputy Chief Patti Sherrill.
During the event, panelists discussed the increasingly sophisticated AI-generated fraud, as well as text/phone/email scams targeting individuals of all ages.
A central message of the event was empowerment through awareness and community support. Taskforce members emphasized that no one should feel embarrassed about being targeted or victimized by a scam. Speaking up and reporting suspicious activity can help prevent others from falling victim.
“These scams are becoming more sophisticated every day,” the Tynan said. “We want residents to know they are not alone — we are all in this together. If something doesn’t feel right, never hesitate to reach out to one of our members for guidance.”
The Canton Anti Scam Taskforce encourages all residents to stay informed, remain vigilant, and seek assistance whenever they suspect fraudulent activity. For more information, go to town.canton.ma.us/1008/Anti-Scam-Task-Force.
