Volunteers come out in force for annual town cleanup

By

More than 300 volunteers fanned out across 17 sites last weekend as part of the fifth annual Canton Cleanup, a town-wide effort held each spring to help “Keep Canton Beautiful.” With residents of all ages pitching in, the volunteer crews were able to fill hundreds of bags of trash while hauling away an assortment of household appliances, car tires, mattresses, scrap metal, and various other “wild finds.”

Organized by the town’s Walk, Bike & Hike Committee in partnership with the DPW, Parks & Recreation, and Canton School Department, the cleanup targeted several highly trafficked areas around town, including school grounds, Canton Center, Devoll Field, Messinger Park, and many more.

Afterwards, everyone was invited back to the CHS football field for a post-event cookout hosted by Canton Parks & Recreation with DJ entertainment and magic by Canton’s own Michael Charles.

Reflecting on another successful cleanup event, WBH member Jeff Sullivan noted that litter remains an ongoing issue in the community and one that is not going to fix itself. “It takes awareness, pride, and people willing to show up and do the work. That is what happened here,” he said.

Sullivan expressed his gratitude to the members of the WBH and Keep Canton Beautiful teams, as well as the many generous sponsors who made the event possible, including Bank of Canton, Rose Santa Rita Cleaning, Trillium, Redball Promotions, B&G Restaurant Supply, Draper Knitting, Orchard Cove and Lamacchia Realty.

He also thanked all of the committed volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and gave their time and energy on Saturday to “help make Canton a cleaner, better place to live and work.”
