CHS sophomore wrestler captures gold at Hock Championships
By Jay TurnerFive Bulldog wrestlers battled their way onto the podium, and one of them — sophomore sensation Calvin Quinn — secured the program’s first individual league title in eight seasons at a memorable Hockomock League Championship meet held last Saturday in Foxboro.
“The Hockomock League is the best high school wrestling league in the state, hands down. It’s truly unrivaled, and our guys really stepped up against some outstanding competition,” noted head coach Nick Matt, a former CHS standout wrestler himself. “We not only have a league champion at 106 pounds, but we had four others advance to the consolation finals and win their third-place matches. It’s a big jump from last year when we only had one wrestler finish in the top three in their weight class.”
Quinn, who took fifth at the same event as a rookie last winter, came in riding a hot streak as the top-seeded wrestler and he did not disappoint, winning all four of his matches by pinfall, culminating with a pin in the finals against a Taunton wrestler ranked ninth in the state.
Coach Matt said he was not surprised in the least by Quinn’s performance, noting that “when the lights come on, he always shines brightest.”
“I’ve felt that way about him since day one,” said Matt. “He’s the type of kid who goes in and takes it, and he leads the right way. He’s the first sophomore captain we’ve ever had in the history of our program.”
Also medaling at the meet for the Bulldogs were senior Connor Hanlon at 138 pounds, junior Matt Morin at 144 pounds, junior Tiernan Ritson at 175 pounds, and senior Owen Sasin at 215 pounds.
Morin, who also took third at last year’s league meet, went 4-1 on the day with four pins, with his last one coming in under 40 seconds in the consolation final to clinch the bronze.
Sasin went 3-1 across his four matches and punctuated his performance with a 4-1, overtime victory over a highly ranked wrestler from Mansfield — a fellow senior and one of Sasin’s longtime rivals in the sport.
Hannon, meanwhile, also saved his best for last, beating the No. 3 ranked wrestler in his weight class in all of Division 2 in dominant fashion (10-2 major decision). He too finished 3-1 at the tournament, as did Ritson, who collected two pins and overcame a 4-1 deficit in the consolation finals to knock off a higher seeded opponent from Foxboro.
In addition to the five place-winners, the Bulldogs also had two other wrestlers with multiple victories on the day, including senior Ryan Hart, who went 3-2 with three pins at 150 pounds, and sophomore Shnider Theodore, who went 2-2 in the 190-pound division before bowing out in the consolation semifinals.
Overall, Canton placed sixth out of 11 teams at this year’s league meet, tying Sharon with 120.5 points and coming within seven points of fourth-place Franklin.
Coach Matt said he was especially proud of the fact that the Bulldogs went unbeaten in the placement round, with several wrestlers avenging losses from earlier in the season. “I’m proud of the growth displayed from this group,” he said. “But we’re far from finished!”
