Hughes, Cheryl
By Canton CitizenCheryl (Lund) Hughes, lovingly known as Sherry, 79, of Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away on January 30, 2026, after a long illness.
Sherry was the daughter of the late Philip “Bud” Lund and Doris (Edmonston) Lund of Canton. She was born on June 16, 1946, in New York and spent her early years in Mamaroneck, NY before her family settled in Canton. She grew up on Morton Street with her brothers, Phil and Scott Lund, and graduated from Canton High School.
After high school, Sherry met and married Owen Hughes, and together they raised four children: Michelle Hughes of Durham, NC; Kim Young of Cartersville, GA; Nicole Waid of Ft. Myers, FL; and Owen Hughes, Jr. of Sudbury.
Sherry was the quiet backbone of the Hughes family. While Owen — “Big O” — was the big personality who knew everyone in Canton, loved a good story, and never met a stranger, Sherry was the behind-the-scenes manager who made sure the wheels didn’t come off. She ran a tight ship: meals planned, bills paid, house cleaned, and kids delivered to lessons, practices, and tournaments — on time. She didn’t seek the spotlight; her love showed up in clean kitchens, paid bills, and lives that ran smoothly.
Sherry was a hard worker in every sense. She worked tirelessly alongside Owen in running the family’s many small businesses, including Hughes Pro Skate, Hughes Pool Service, and summer hockey camps. If you walked into Hughes Pro Skate on any afternoon you would see Owen in the back of the store sharpening skates and entertaining a crowd with his stories, while Sherry ran the front — fitting skates for a line of kids sitting on the wooden bench, grabbing equipment off the shelves, and keeping the cash register humming. Her attention to detail, conscientious record-keeping, and diligence kept the businesses running and helped put all four children through college.
Sherry could also organize a great party. For many years, she hosted holiday dinners at the Hughes home on Messinger Street, along with legendary summer pool parties — garage cleared out, long tables set up, clam bakes with friends and neighbors. The Hughes house was always a welcoming place. Neighborhood kids knew exactly where the “cookie cabinet” was and helped themselves. Kenny the UPS driver took his lunch breaks by the pool. Summers were loud, busy, and joyful, with kids constantly coming and going — and Sherry quietly made sure it all happened.
In 2000, Sherry and Owen retired and moved to Dunedin, Florida, eager to enjoy golf, sunshine, and a well-earned rest. Tragically, Owen died unexpectedly just months later. He was the love of Sherry’s life, and his loss was devastating. Though she never fully recovered from that heartbreak, she carried on as best she could, eventually moving to Ft. Myers to be closer to her daughter Nicole and family.
Sherry also devoted herself to caring for her mother, Doris, whom she loved deeply and who adored her in return. Doris spent many winters in Florida with Sherry, where the two settled into a rhythm of walks, wine on the lanai, and easy companionship. Sherry made sure her mother was comfortable, cared for, and always included. Her children treasure those memories.
Sherry leaves behind her four children, their spouses, and 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Philip Lund and his recently deceased wife, Clare, of Foxboro and North Falmouth, and her brother Scott Lund and his wife, Claire, of Norwell.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sherry’s memory may be made to the Cancer Alliance Network of Bonita Springs, FL, which provides support for individuals and families affected by cancer.
