Town digs out after massive storm dumps 2 ft of snow
By Mike BergerForty-nine DPW snow removal trucks and 16 private contractors worked around the clock to combat the more than 25 inches of snow that fell over the area between Sunday morning and Tuesday morning. Town crews started working around 11 a.m. on Sunday to treat the roads and worked for a total of approximately 50 hours.
DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta said the town received 21.4 inches as of 7 a.m. on Monday, with another four inches falling Monday evening into Tuesday.
Trotta said as of Tuesday morning, all Canton streets and sidewalks had been plowed and treated and all main roads were snow-free
Trotta said DPW crews faced the usual problems that arise during major snow events, such as conflicts with driveway plows pushing snow into the street; however, he said there were no major equipment issues.
Trotta praised all of the DPW workers who stepped up during the storm and cleared the roads. “The team came in on time, worked consistently hard for two days, and got a tough job done,” he said.
Deputy Police Chief Patty Sherrill reported five motor vehicle crashes during the storm. She added that several cars became disabled on Sunday in the area around 250 Turnpike Street until plows could treat the roadway.
Between 8 a.m. on Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday, Canton firefighters responded to 16 emergency calls, including 13 ambulance runs, a request from Norwood Fire for the Field Transfusion Unit, and calls for a water leak and a downed wire.
