James E. Walsh Jr. (Jimmy), 81, of Canton, formerly of Dorchester, passed away peacefully with his son and daughter-in-law by his side after a brief illness.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 26, 1944, to an American serviceman and his wife, Jimmy moved with his family back to Dorchester upon his discharge. He spent his formative years there until the family settled in Canton when he was 13. Having great speed and agility, Jimmy excelled in sports, especially track and field. Upon his graduation in 1962, Jim furthered his education by receiving an associate’s degree in business from Burdett College in Boston.

From there he joined the United States Army, where he served proudly until 1969. A decorated veteran, Jim was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Service Cross.

After his honorable discharge, he went to work for New England Telephone, where he worked as an EI technician for 32 years until his retirement from now Verizon in 2001. In his later years Jim enjoyed movies, sports, and landscaping his yard. He adored his boxers, Izzy and Charzy, and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his father, James E. Walsh Sr., his mother, Alice M. Walsh (nee Keefe), and his long-term girlfriend, Lorraine M. “Lorrie” Ferry. He is survived by his son, James J. Walsh (Jay) and his wife, Beth N. Walsh (nee Butler), of Randolph, and his former wives Judith A. Prendergast (nee Johnson) of Dighton and Diane L. Walsh (nee D’Onofrio) of Foxboro.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 17, from 4-7 p.m. in the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 18, at 11 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish (formerly St. John’s). Interment to follow at Knollwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the MSPCA, 350 S. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02310, www.mspca.org.
