Red-hot girls soccer team pads division lead

With a perfect 6-0-0 league record and an overall mark of 6-1-1, the Canton High girls varsity soccer team is off to one of its best starts in years as it eyes its first Hockomock title since the COVID-shortened season of 2020.

Currently sitting two points ahead of Mansfield in the Davenport Division standings, Coach Idris Senyonjo’s squad has the look of a well-balanced contender, outscoring opponents by a combined margin if 16-8.

In the first installment of the MIAA power rankings, the Canton girls occupy the No. 3 slot in Division 2, trailing only the aforementioned Hornets and the top-ranked Duxbury Dragons.

In their last four contests, the Bulldogs have racked up three shutouts, including recent home wins over North Attleboro and eighth-ranked Oliver Ames, as well as a scoreless draw in an away match versus nonleague Braintree, currently the ninth-ranked team in the Division 1 poll.

In last Thursday’s game against the OA Tigers, freshman Juliana Cabrera proved to be the difference maker, knocking in a rebound off a 20-yard free kick by junior midfielder Madison McCabe to lift the hosts to victory in a rain-soaked battle at Memorial Field.

The goal by Cabrera was her third of the season, and she now ranks third on the team in total points with five (3g, 2a) — trailing only the senior duo of Georgia Campbell and Alyssa Wong, who are tied for eighth in the league with nine points apiece. Wong has been the team’s go-to goal scorer with six on the season, while Campbell leads in assists with five. Sophomore Maya Mitrea has also flashed her playmaking skills with four helpers of her own.

On defense, the Bulldogs have been one of the stingiest teams in the Hock, aided by the steady play of goaltender Katherine Powers, who ranks second in the league with three shutouts and a goals against average of 1.00.

Now approaching the midway point of the regular season, the Canton girls were due to get back to action on Tuesday night with a home game against Taunton. But the schedule will soon get a lot tougher with a string of highly ranked opponents, starting Friday against 10th-ranked Milton.

The team then heads out on the road to play Stoughton next Wednesday, followed by two more road contests against Franklin (D1 #17) and Mansfield (D2 #2) and another tough home date with King Philip Regional (D2 #7).
