Town nears completion on several roadwork projects

The town of Canton is putting the finishing touches on three major infrastructure projects, all of which are expected to wrap up by the end of this month or shortly after — assuming the weather cooperates.

On Bolivar Street, road rehabilitation work that began in mid-September is nearing the final stages, with paving taking place last week following a process known as cold-in-place recycling (CIR), in which the top few inches of asphalt are milled and reclaimed. According to Billy Walsh, operations manager for the Canton Department of Public Works, all that’s left to do now on Bolivar Street is to loam and seed the roadway edges and paint the lines.

Line painting is also one of the few remaining items on the punch-list for the Elm Street culvert project, which is focused on a section of the road that travels over Pecunit Brook (between Dedham and Pecunit streets). In addition to installing a pre-cast concrete culvert, contractors also recently constructed a new retaining wall and realigned a section of the water main under the culvert. Other project components include installation of a guardrail as well as general stormwater improvements and miscellaneous site work.

While construction on the culvert itself is finished, a recent update posted on the town website noted that roadwork is ongoing at the site and residents should expect traffic delays and possible lane closures through the end of October or possibly the beginning of November, weather permitting.

Meanwhile, on the southern edge of town near the Stoughton line, work continues on the Indian Lane drainage improvement project — a series of infrastructure upgrades that aims to address a significant ponding issue near the intersection of South Street.

In addition to installing a new drain line and new catch basins, construction crews are also regrading that section of Indian Lane, and according to Walsh, they expect to be working on paving by the end of this month — again weather permitting.

The other major infrastructure project that’s underway in Canton is replacement of the Revere Court bridge, which travels over the West Branch of the Neponset River. Funded by the state Department of Transportation, the $4.5 million project calls for the construction of a new, wider bridge in conformance with the latest design standards. The project is expected to take around two years to complete and is currently at the 23 percent mark, according to MassDOT’s project page.

Residents of Revere Court who have questions or concerns about the project should contact the Canton Engineering Department at 781-821-5063 or the Canton DPW at 781-821-5023.

One other road improvement project that was originally slated to be done this fall — milling and paving in the Wentworth Road neighborhood — has instead been postponed to the spring. Besides Wentworth Road, other streets scheduled for paving beginning in April 2026 include Kingsbury, East, Redman, Ridgehill, Talbot and Tilden roads.
