Select Board approves all-alcohol license for Shaw’s

By

The Canton Select Board on Tuesday authorized the transfer of an all-alcohol license to Shaw’s Supermarkets, paving the way for alcohol to be sold at the grocer’s Cobb’s Corner location.

Outlining the company’s plans in a presentation to the board, Nicholas Zozula, attorney for Shaw’s, said the new alcohol section in the store would have its own manager as well as three to four employees, all of whom will undergo special alcohol sales training.

The section will span two aisles, and access will be restricted during off-hours. The proposed hours of operation will be Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a separate license needed for Sunday sales.

The company said it plans to spend approximately $500,000 on site alterations and renovations as part of the transition to alcohol sales. They will also need to obtain approval from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

With the green light from the Select Board, the Canton location is poised to become the ninth Shaw’s in Massachusetts with a license to sell alcohol. That represents the upper limit for any single grocery chain based on a 2011 state law, which raised the license cap from three to nine per retailer. A 2022 state ballot question sought to gradually double that limit to 18 licenses per retailer, by the measure was rejected by Massachusetts voters
