Canton residents gearing up for Jimmy Fund Walk
By Canton CitizenDozens of Canton residents of all ages have signed up to participate in the 37th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai on Sunday, October 5.
The only organized walk permitted to use the famed Boston Marathon course, the iconic annual event will bring together thousands of participants to raise funds to support all forms of adult and pediatric care and research at the nation’s premier cancer center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
“For 36 years, the Jimmy Fund Walk has been a cornerstone of support for lifesaving cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber,” said Caitlin Fink, vice president of the Jimmy Fund. “Every participant contributes directly to advancing lifesaving research and critically important cancer care. Walk day is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of hope and the shared commitment of the Jimmy Fund community.”
Among this year’s walkers from Canton are several team captains, including Amy Killeen and Tara Shuman of Team Tara, which has collectively raised over $1.4 million for cancer research over the past 10-plus years. Also returning to lead fundraising teams are Canton residents Sara Marshall, captain of “Seanie Strong” in memory of her late son Sean; Amy Ennis, a Canton mom and cancer survivor who leads Team “Bushy Strong”; Barbara Barrett, captain of the newly formed “Team Lean on Me,” consisting of several other Canton residents; and Rita Senier-Coletti, who is heading up a fundraising team from Gray, Gray & Gray LLP, a Canton-based accounting firm.
Also slated to participate again this year are Canton residents and Jimmy Fund Walk veterans Tom Birmingham, Blakely Ennis, Lisa Fabiano, Amy Minkin, Michelle Ranaghan, Patrick Waggett and Susan Walter, to name a few.
Additionally, 7-year-old Kieran Whall, a Canton youngster who is now cancer-free after bravely battling B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, will participate this year as a Jimmy Fund Walk Hero, representing Team Clean Harbors Strong.
All participants in the Jimmy Fund Walk have the flexibility to choose from four distances: 5K (from Dana-Farber’s Longwood campus); 10K (from Newton); half-marathon (from Wellesley); or marathon (from Hopkinton). Whatever route they choose, they will be supported by hundreds of volunteers while gaining extra motivation and inspiration from the poster-sized photographs of Walk Heroes like Kieran that will appear along the course.
All routes will conclude at the Jimmy Fund Walk Finish Line Powered by Schneider Electric at Boston Common, where participants can enjoy a celebration with food, entertainment, and more.
