On Thursday, August 21, more than 200 members and supporters of the Skating Club of Boston came together on the ice for the inaugural Frozen 5K — an evening of fundraising and fun to benefit the ‘Always Champions’ campaign.
Launched last month at the Norwood-based figure skating club, Always Champions is a multifaceted campaign designed to celebrate the legacies of the six club members who died tragically in a plane crash last winter in Washington, D.C. The victims included two promising young skaters, Jinna Han and Spencer Lane; their mothers, Jin Han and Christine Lane; and two of the club’s top coaches, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov — a husband-and-wife team who were well known in the figure skating community as two-time former Olympians and winners of the 1994 World pairs championship.
Participants in last week’s Frozen 5K event collected pledges from family and friends and then laced up their skates to complete 28 laps around the Tenley E. Albright Performance Center, an Olympic-sized skating rink. The fundraiser also featured music, food, beverages and a cash bar.
On hand to cheer on the participants were Canton resident Spencer Howe and his skating partner Emily Chan, the 2025 U.S. national pewter medalists and 2023 U.S. silver medalists, as well as fellow National Team members Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov (U.S. pairs champions); Max Naumov, son of Evgenia and Vadim (U.S. national pewter medalist); and Jimmy Ma (Four Continents bronze medalist).
The initial fundraising goal was set at $300,000, with the funds being earmarked for a variety of permanent remembrances, including a tribute wall with stories and photos of each of the six club members; memorial benches in memory of the three families who perished; two new scholarship funds; and three new annual awards: the Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov Legacy Award and the Jinna Han and Spencer Lane Awards for Excellence.
