Town adds recycling receptacles at Pine St. station

The town of Canton announced last week that it will be temporarily adding two recycling receptacles to the town transfer station at 99 Pine Street, providing residents with one more option during the ongoing Republic Services work stoppage.

The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) granted the request by the town to temporarily expand operations at the transfer station to include recyclables beginning Monday, August 11.

“Our DPW staff worked hard to get permission from the state to expand the services available to residents as we all wait for an end to the strike situation,” said Town Administrator Charles Doody. “We strongly encourage residents to utilize the newly expanded Pine Street Transfer site. We’ll continue to assign Department of Public Works (DPW) employees to the transfer station to unload trash and recyclables from vehicles.”

More than a month has passed since Republic Services resumed curbside trash and recycling collection with replacement drivers on Monday, July 7, following a decision by the company’s labor union, Teamsters Local 25, to go on strike in pursuit of higher wages and improved benefits.

Trucks have faced additional delays from striking workers and replacement drivers’ unfamiliarity with Canton’s routes and collection schedule. Despite the partial resumption of services, routes have not been completed on their usual day and have been taking multiple days to complete.

The additional 10-yard containers will collect single-stream recyclables from residents. Collections will be transported to the Waste Management facility in Avon daily.

Four DPW staff will be on hand at the Pine Street station to provide oversight during this temporary operational expansion. Unloading of solid waste and recyclables from private vehicles will be done by the on-site staff only.

The town will continue accepting municipal solid waste (MSW) and cardboard at the transfer station.

A loader and excavator will be operating behind safety cones in a designated area where people and cars will be prohibited from entering. Traffic will flow in one direction (follow the signs, cones and instructions from on-site town employees).
