Jr. Legion baseball back atop division with 2 strong wins

By

As of Monday morning, the Canton Junior American Legion Post 24 baseball team was in the pole position in the 10-team District 6 with a 7-3 record. Dedham stood in second place at 6-2-1, with an important showdown between the top two clubs scheduled for Wednesday night at Dedham. Canton will be looking to exact revenge after they were routed by Dedham last week, 14-0.

Following that defeat, Canton rebounded with an exciting, 3-2 road win over Needham and a 7-0 shutout victory over Sharon behind the sparkling pitching of Will Young.

Young was brilliant in his outing, allowing only two hits while striking out 12 and walking no batters en route to a complete-game win. Young, a junior on the CHS varsity baseball team, was in complete control with a dominant fastball, shutting down Sharon in under 90 minutes.

It was Young’s third win of the season. “Will has a great fastball, really good control and he pitched well tonight,” said assistant coach Joel Lesser.

Canton came out strong early, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding one in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and two more in the seventh. Noel Laurenco delivered two hits with Chase Brodney, Brandon Gannon, and Young adding one apiece. Canton baserunners stole eight bases in the game, including two each by Dylan Lank and Gannon.

Earlier in the week, Canton withstood a Needham rally and held on to win 3-2. Alex Secord and Gannon combined for the win with Secord pitching the first three innings and Gannon coming on for the last four, inducing a final groundout to the mound with the bases loaded to seal the win. Offensive leaders were Matt Ryan with two hits and Brodney with a hit and an RBI. Gio Polluci was also busy on the basepaths for Canton with a pair of walks and three stolen bases.

“It was a very well-played game,” said Lesser. “We showed good patience at the plate with six walks.”

After a break for the July 4th holiday, Canton will resume action next week with a game in Braintree on July 7 followed by a home game against North Attleboro on Wednesday, July 9, starting at 5:45 p.m. at Ruane Field.
