The CHS softball team came close to upsetting a playoff-bound Stoughton squad on Monday, taking a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning on the Knights’ home field before falling in the end 6-3.

Freshman pitcher Kennedy Burke drew the start for Canton and kept Stoughton off the board for five full innings before the Knights struck for four unearned runs. Head coach Sandy Lombardi said Burke pitched well with three strikeouts but fell victim to late defensive lapses that marred an otherwise strong performance by the Bulldogs.

All of Canton’s runs had come courtesy of a three-run double by junior Abby Stock, who also came up big at the plate last week with a 3-for-3 showing in a 13-7 loss to Oliver Ames and an RBI single in an 8-4 defeat against Mansfield.

Both games were at home, as was an earlier 6-3 loss to North Attleboro. The Bulldogs then wrapped up the week by traveling to Foxboro, where they fell 13-2 to the division-leading Warriors.

Kayley Furbush was a bright spot for Canton in the Foxboro game, belting her first homerun to drive in both of the Bulldogs’ runs. Other offensive leaders last week included Chloe Guerschuny, who went 2 for 3 with a double against NA and added a double and two RBIs versus Mansfield, and Fiona Trendell, who had two hits and three RBIs against Oliver Ames. Also chipping in at the plate in Tuesday’s loss to the Hornets were Delaney Clegg (2 hits, RBI) and Kailyn Durham (RBI double).

While no longer in playoff contention, the Bulldogs (4-15) had one more chance to snap its losing skid with a rematch against Mansfield scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
